"It takes a village to raise a child,
but what does it take to raise a village?"

Time Banking is not just popular in America, it is international in scope.  These two videos tell a wonderful story of how children, the elderly, and all sorts of everyday people in England get things done, develop new skills and interests, and help build community.  As you'll see, individuals, schools, businesses, and other organizations all have something to offer - and something to gain - from the Time Banking way.

The Roanoke Valley is finally joining the national network of community TimeBanks.

It's About Time Roanoke!

  What Is a TimeBank?

A TimeBank is a community of people who sup-
port each other. When you spend an hour to do
something for an individual or group, you earn a
Time Dollar. Then you can use that Time Dollar
to buy an hour of any other neighbor's time or
engage in a group activity offered by a neighbor.
Take a look at the Circle of Caring diagram here to
see some examples.

It's that simple. Yet it also has profound effects.
You get to know your neighbors and build an old-
fashioned extended family of people who take care
of each other. TimeBanks are limited only by the
imagination of their members, so they reflect the
unique needs and aspirations of their own
communities.

    Why a TimeBank?

With Time Banking, you will be working with a
group of individuals who are joined together for
the common good. It brings out the best in peo-
ple, because Time Banking is a system that con-
nects unmet needs with untapped resources.
In that simple way, Time Banking changes the
world. It may be through a single exchange be-
tween two friends. Or it might be by changing the
dynamics of human service agencies and non-
profits that serve thousands and even millions of
people over time.

There are hundreds of TimeBanks across America
and around the world.  Click here to visit a
TimeBank in Wisconsin.  Click here to visit
another TimeBank in Ohio.

Check out these short videos about TimeBanks in America and England.  The one to the right was made by a member of a TimeBank in Michigan, who earned Time Dollars for his effort.  The video below, left, is a public television piece about a TimeBank in Vermont, while the video to its right is about a TimeBank operating out of a doctor's office in England.
