Each year, the Conflict Resolution Center awards a $500 scholarship to a high school senior or seniors who utilize mediation skills to resolve disputes in every aspect of life and who encourage others to do so. These scholarships are awarded in memory of Amy Brown Barnhart who spent 26 years in the Roanoke County Schools and 19 years as Guidance Coordinator for Cave Spring Junior High School. She started the first Roanoke County middle school Natural Helper program and was very supportive of their Peer Mediation program which helps students resolve their own disputes. Amy also founded the first Peace Walk in 1998 to help raise money for peer mediation programs in the schools. After her retirement, she served the Supreme Court of Virginia as a certified court mediator and mentor. She was a tireless volunteer for the Conflict Resolution Center and served on the Center’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee from 1994 until her death in 2002. Amy believed that good communication skills and the ability to resolve your own conflicts in a positive way was a vital life skill and the Conflict Resolution Center hopes to perpetuate her work through this scholarship.
